Counting M&M's

What happened to the days of counting M&M's?

To the days where little boys wanted to be astronauts and firefighters and little girls ballerinas and veterinarians?

When everything was possible, the sky was the limit, and adulthood was an eternity away?

I feel as though I am five again and people are asking me what I want to be when I grow up. Only now "when I grow up" is fast approaching and a firmer answer is expected. I can not change it every year from artist to writer to world traveler; I must pick one.

Can't I just slam my door shut, let the tears tumble, and scream through my door, " I DON'T KNOW!"

Life is so uncertain and we don't really know what turn of events will or may change our life. To say what we want to be or make some definite plan seems pointless.

I do believe in goals and dreams because I think without them we would all wander aimlessly. However, wandering to some extent is good.

My friend had a tattoo that said, "Not all who wander are lost."

I think for now I will go with that.

I'm starting to think about the whole taking a year off thing, and it makes so much sense. You really do have to "wander" through everything before you really know what you want to do.

I often worry about the same thing. What if I don't know what I want to do for the rest of my life? I always try and remember that no matter which path you chose to go down be it what career your going to study for, or where your going to live, you can always change your course. I had a teacher once who previously was a banker. He was making close to two hundred thousand dollars a year and one day he quit his job and went to school to become a teacher. When I asked him why he gave up his money making banking job he told me that "Happiness is much more important than money". It just goes to show that no matter what you chose to do or be it can always change. Your never "stuck" in one place, you'll always have the power to change for the better.
